Abstract
The Institute for Safety Problems of Nuclear Power Plants (ISP NPP) of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine is a state scientific institution engaged in fundamental and applied research in the field of nuclear and radiation safety. In 2024, the Institute continued its work on the transformation of the Shelter object into an ecologically safe system. This included monitoring temperature and humidity conditions, analyzing radiation levels and neutron flux, and modeling the behavior of fuel-containing materials (FCM). Updated 3D models and FCM databases were developed to improve safety management. Results were used to support dismantling operations and inform annual safety reports. The Institute also advanced reactor safety by developing new diagnostic systems for VVER‑1000 reactors, including models of neutron-physical and thermohydraulic processes. Research focused on improving the safety and efficiency of nuclear fuel usage, optimizing the operation of electrical systems, and enhancing generator reliability. In support of future nuclear power development, the ISP NPP evaluated the environmental impact of new nuclear facilities, including AP1000 reactors. Comparative analyses of AP1000 and VVER‑1000 designs were performed, alongside studies of siting criteria, meteorological data, and release scenarios for the Khmelnytskyi NPP. The ISP NPP is actively engaged in international cooperation through joint projects with the IAEA, NATO, and European partners, focusing on radioactive waste management, radiation monitoring, and nuclear decommissioning. The Institute also contributes to education and training through academic partnerships, graduate programs, and international research initiatives. These efforts reinforce capabilities of Ukraine in nuclear safety and environmental protection.
